Young hotshot Detective Geminer became a police officer to put away scum like the man who killed his father. His latest case, the Do-Good Killer, chooses his victims based on prior criminal records and thinks their history of crime is justification for his murders. As the isolated Geminer attempts to capture the elusive criminal, cope with the loss of his father, and find normal human relationships, he questions his own motives behind being a police officer and begins to learn that he and his enemy have quite a bit in common.

Interesting plot with a different point of view on good vs. evil. Even though the criminal is revealed before the end, the story still kept me guessing what was going to happen next. Lots of descriptive details made the story come alive for me. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because, with all the detail in the first 3/4 of the book, the ending seemed too neat and tidy. I would have liked more information on how the police finally figured out the criminal's identity. There is some speculation from the criminal's point of view, but nothing is confirmed as to whether or not that is how he is caught. Still, this was a very good book, and I found myself staying up late a couple of nights to keep reading it. Nice job, Mr. Tower, on your debut novel! Hope to see some more from you soon!

A Reason to Kill edition by Nathaniel Tower Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I felt a blend of American Psycho (the movie), the Stranger, and Fight Club (the novel, not so much the movie) in this work.

I liked how the author describes scenes through the eyes of the characters, noting certain details that are important to the mindset and the situation at hand. He also does a good job of putting you into the mind of the characters.

I don't want to give a spoiler alert, but this has a refreshingly unique ending. I enjoyed reading this, and at only 180 pages it was a nice and quick summer read. Well done Nathaniel.
I found this story engaging, evidenced by the fact that I read almost the whole thing in one sitting. Yes, it is a bit of a mystery - but I found it to be more of a well-written book than simply a mystery. I think I actually found myself more entertained by the writing style and subtle humor than by the actual mystery. It might be a bit hard to describe the style/subtle humor - but for example I like how the author takes obvious statements and ideas, but then explains them in a logical, yet nonchalant manner, as if they weren't obvious before the explanation. A bit hard to describe perhaps - but if you read the book, you may see what I'm talking about. But even after I "solved" the mystery (and I think it is probably expected that the reader will solve the mystery before the answer is revealed), I think I felt just as engaged and entertained as I did before solving it - which I think speaks to the notion that this is a well-written story and is meant to stand as much more than simply a mystery. It is a bit dark/disturbing at times too - but that perhaps just adds to the intrigue (depends on the reader, I suppose). Overall, I found this to be a well-written and engaging book.
Generally a well written book with an interesting twist (although not entirely new). The story is told through the eyes of a murderer (the Do Good Killer) and the detective trying to bring him to justice. It is fast paced with quite interesting characters. The only criticism I have is that it appears that the author wants to keep the identity of the killer a secret and then changes his mind mid-way through the book and reveals his identity. It makes things a bit disjointed but still this book is definitely worth the read. To describe the book in any greater detail would ruin the story for future readers.
A Reason to Kill is a murder mystery told through the voices of the killer and the detective trying to catch him. I like the fact that the story is told from both perspectives. I enjoyed reading this book.

I only have two negatives about this book. The first is the fact that the reader is left hanging about certain details in the book (cannot go into detail without giving the story away. The other negative is that by the middle of the book I had already figured out who the killer is.

Overall this was a really good book. I would recommend it if you are a fan of mysteries. It is a page-turner.
